The Webinar will first provide an introduction to the scientific publishing scene- its history and recent developments. Then it will explain how journal operations are organised, including the roles of the Publisher, Editors and Editorial Board. The webinar will then outline how to get published, including guidance on selecting a journal and formulating the paper content and layout. The peer review process is described. Authors’ responsibilities are discussed, including advice on publishing ethics. The move towards Open Access is also mentioned.

Professor Allan Matthews
University of Manchester
Allan Matthews is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and Professor of Surface Engineering and Tribology in the Department of Materials at the University of Manchester. He is a member of the Henry Royce Institute and Director of the EPSRC NetworkPlus in Digitalised Surface Manufacturing. He has had central roles in several professional and learned societies, including the Exec Committee of the Surface Engineering Division of the AVS, the Board of the Society of Vacuum Coaters and the Board of the IoM3 Surface Engineering Division. He is Editor-in-Chief of the Elsevier journal Surface and Coatings Technology.
